Boy, did I put this off for way too long! :(

Ganked from [personal profile] reddywhp:
  1. Leave me a comment saying you want to do the meme.
  2. I'll respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
  3. You should update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
  4. You should include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
  5. When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions.

1. Your profile states you're a student at OSU, yet you're in Louisville, KY. What are you studying in Louisville, and where are you studying it?

I made sure to fix this very soon after you pointed this out. I originally was a student at Ohio State University, which I attended to earn my B.A in Psychology. Since then, I've moved to Louisville, KY as of mid-August 2008, where I started in the Ph.D program for Counseling Psychology at the University of Louisville's College of Education.

2. Your profile says you're a suiter, what suit or suits do you have? How does each character relate to the personality that is you?

Currently, I only have one active suit, and that would be Pepper Pup, AKA this critter here..

Another good picture of him from this Halloween is right here...

As for what side of me that he represents, I guess one could say that he represents the excitable, hyperactive puppy that is inside of me. That's if you really pay much credence to that type of belief. I am not entirely one to believe that a fursuit owned by someone is entirely a reflection of themselves, considering I've done work as a professional mascot performer. Still, when I play as Pepper Pup, the character that I'm putting out there is excitable, friendly, a little naive, and most of all overly eager to earn praise. Also, he's a bit of a dancer. I typically use him as a justification for doing hip-hop styles of dance while as a character. It's honestly become part of his shtick.

3. Which came first, and by how far: Furry or Kink? Do you differentiate between them?

Furry came by quite a long shot (yes, I hear you people laughing the background. Sickos!) I found furry as a 12 year old, so that would put about a 7-8 year distance between Furry and Kink.

Kink really didn't occur to me until I was about 19-20 years old. Before that, I knew a basis of some of the things I was attracted to (hush, those of you who knew me back in my mid-teens), but I really didn't have an opportunity for any exploration until then. Things have only started to culminate recently to the point that I have an idea of what I like, what I'm willing to explore and try, and so forth.

As for how I differentiate between the two of them? Furry for some is equivalent to kink, but for me its not. Fursuiting is something that I'm a hobby of, because it gives me the opportunity to bounce around in a costume, act like an idiot, and "act" (really, it's more pantomiming than anything else). It is a fairly open community, mostly accepting of others, that is unified by a common interest in anthropomorphics. Though I do know a number of people from the kink community who also cross boundaries into the furry fandom, I feel that for me, the personal meaning of the two are that they are near mutually exclusive. My sexual proclivities do not define who I am as a furry or who I am when I'm involved with the furry fandom, and visa versa.

4. How out are you to your family about kink, furry or being gay?

Furry? No. Well, that's not entirely true. Most of my family knows that I do mascot work.

Kink? No.

Gay? Everyone in my family, except my mother and stepfather.

5. How did you initially come upon Furrydom, and what were your initial in-person interactions like?

I initially came upon the Furry Fandom at the age of 12, having just moved to Ohio two years earlier. I had developed a fascination with werewolves via the movie Teen Wolf (yes, I know). From there, I found the White Wolf book series Werewolf: The Apocolypse. From there, I found [livejournal.com profile] brokkentwolf's original website. This linked me to alt.horror.werewolves, and from there, alt.lifestyles.furry. Being the "new kid" in a public middle school in a new state, I latched on to a social outlet where people were more than willing to accept me (which, 10-11 years later, I find to be one of the biggest pluses and minuses about the fandom). Furthermore, I was someone who lived on my computer. As I was a very socially awkward and extremely distractable kid, I spent a lot of time on GemStone, Dragon Gate, and DragonRealms (all different MUDs that were available through AOL at the time).

My first in-person interactions were fairly awkward. I was an 18 year old, having just graduated from high school, and attending my first furry convention (Anthrocon 2003). I will admit that I was a little fanboyish at it (okay, a little more than a little), but my time in high school didn't particularly help me in the way of proper socio-interactive development. All I can say is that [livejournal.com profile] baja_hyena put up with me at that convention, so thank you, Baja. ;)  Also, [livejournal.com profile] berin might remember a skittish yet eager me as well.
